Overview

Newtron Forensic Engineering is seeking a recognized leader in forensic electrical engineering to launch and grow our Electrical Forensic Engineering practice. This is a rare opportunity to shape a new practice group dedicated to investigating electrical failures, fire and explosion causes, energy systems, and control systems, focusing on rigorous technical methodology and litigation support. You will be instrumental in building a high-performing team, establishing technical standards, and leading complex investigations across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors.

Management Requirements

  • Lead and grow a best-in-class Electrical Forensic Engineering team
  • Establish the practice's strategic direction aligned with corporate objectives
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in legal, insurance, and technical forums
  • Build strong relationships with insurers, lawyers, property managers, and electrical contractors
  • Review, approve, and ensure quality of expert reports and technical opinions
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers to foster technical excellence
  • Collaborate with other technical practice groups on multidisciplinary files

Technical Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with deep capabilities in several of the following technical areas and the leadership skills to oversee a diverse team of specialists across this range of expertise.

  • Fire & Explosion cause investigations involving electrical systems
  • Electrical failure analysis (transformers, switchgear, wiring, panels, EV chargers, renewable energy systems)
  • Building electrical system design, load analysis, and fault protection assessments
  • Power distribution systems (commercial and industrial) and failure impact evaluations
  • Control systems and automation failures (PLC, SCADA, motor control)
  • Lightning strike and surge damage assessments
  • Damage causation from arcing, short circuits, overloads, and design deficiencies
  • Code compliance investigations (OESC, CSA, NEC, NFPA 70, IEEE)
  • Forensic analysis of electro-mechanical components and integration with mechanical systems
  • Demonstrative evidence preparation for litigation and subrogation

Educational Background

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. (Ph.D. an asset)

License Requirements

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario or eligible for licensure
  • Expert witness experience or courtroom testimony credentials preferred

Market Expertise

  • Insurance claims, legal disputes, and subrogation requiring electrical causation analysis
  • Industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and residential electrical systems
  • Stakeholders include loss adjusters, insurers, litigation counsel, building owners, and contractors

Project Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in forensic investigation, fire origin and cause, or litigation support (preferred)
  • Proven leadership on complex or high-profile electrical failure files
